एक किसान के चार बेटे थे। एक बार किसान बीमार पड़ा। वह जानता था कि वह जीवित नहीं रहेगा। लेकिन किसान की समस्या थी। वह इस बात को जानता था, कि उसके बेटे एकजुट नहीं हैं।
किसान ने मरने से पहले सबको एकजुट करने का फैसला किया। उसने चारों बेटों को बुलाया। वे उसके बिस्तर पर के पास आए। उसने उनसे कुछ छड़ियाँ लाने को कहा। बेटे छड़ियाँ ले आए और उन्हें अपने पिता के सामने रख दिया।
किसान ने अपने चारों बेटों को एक-एक छड़ी दी और कहा कि इसे तोड़ दो। सबने अपनी अपनी छड़ी आसानी से तोड़ दी। तब किसान ने उनसे छड़ियों का गठरी बनाने को कहा। उन्होंने ऐसा ही किया।
फिर किसान ने बारी बारी इस छड़ियों के गठरी को तोड़ने के लिए कहा। उनमें से कोई भी गठरी नहीं तोड़ सका। किसान ने उन्हें गठरी की तरह एकजुट होकर जीने की सलाह दी। उसके बाद किसान मर गया लेकिन उसके बेटों ने एकता के महत्व को समझा।
कहानी का अभिप्राय: एकता में ताकत है।

Then the farmer asked to break the bundle of sticks in turn. None of them could break the bundle. The farmer advised them to live together like a bundle. After that, the farmer died but his sons understood the importance of unity.
Moral of the Story: There is strength in unity.
